Gardener and a Little Colonel

Executed in oil on canvas, Gerson employs a restrained palette that emphasizes natural tones of earth, foliage and clothing. The brushwork balances detailed rendering of the figures’ garments with looser treatment of the surrounding trees, aligning the work with the realist tendency to portray ordinary subjects with fidelity and modest compositional simplicity.

Created during the period of the Partitions, the painting entered the National Museum in Kraków, where it remains on display. Gerson, a prominent realist painter, educator and critic, produced the work while teaching at Warsaw’s School of Fine Arts, contributing to the formation of later Polish neo‑romantic artists.

The scene reflects the social landscape of a Poland divided among foreign powers, where rural customs persisted despite political upheaval.
