Blyhooft employs a soft, directional light that illuminates Leidecker’s face while the surrounding foliage and architecture recede into a muted, atmospheric haze. The handling of fabric and the delicate rendering of the ruffles reflect a refined brushwork reminiscent of contemporaries such as Caspar Netscher, indicating an affinity for the polished, elegant style of mid‑17th‑century Dutch portraiture.

The portrait was painted in Middelburg, where Blyhooft was active from the late 1650s until his death in 1681. After remaining in private hands for several centuries, it entered the Rijksmuseum’s holdings, where it is displayed as part of the museum’s representation of Dutch civil portraiture.

During the Dutch Golden Age, provincial officials often commissioned portraits to affirm their civic roles and personal wealth. This work aligns with that practice, offering a visual record of Zeeland’s administrative elite.
