The portrait was completed during Kokular’s active years in Warsaw, where he helped establish the School of Fine Arts. It remained within Polish collections and was later acquired by the National Museum in Warsaw, where it has been held since the 19th century. Its continuous presence in national custody underscores its cultural significance.

Created in the aftermath of Poland’s partitions, the portrait reflects a cultural effort to preserve national identity through portraiture of educated elites.
