About this work

Overview

Arthur Rackham’s watercolour, created in 1900 for the illustrated edition of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, visualises the tale “The Old Man and his Grandson.” The composition shows an elderly figure seated on a wooden bench, absorbed in a simple act of eating from a bowl. The image is composed of two adjoining panels that together form a quiet domestic scene.

Subject & Meaning

The central figure, an aged man in modest white garments, is draped with a patterned brown‑yellow cloth across his lap, emphasizing his humble status. His focused attention on the bowl suggests themes of sustenance and the everyday rituals of survival, echoing the moral undertones of the Grimm narrative about intergenerational care and poverty.

Technique & Style

Executed in watercolour, Rackham employs delicate washes that yield soft transitions of tone, lending the scene a dreamlike atmosphere. Subtle gradations of colour and fine line work define the textures of the bench, clothing, and bowl, while the restrained palette reinforces the work’s contemplative mood without resorting to dramatic chiaroscuro.

History & Provenance

Although initially produced for the 1900 Grimm’s Fairy Tales volume, the illustration was later enhanced with colour in 1904 for a planned exhibition. Despite this preparation, the piece was never shown publicly and has remained within the artist’s estate, illustrating the often‑unrealised exhibition histories of early twentieth‑century book illustrations.
