About this work

Overview

Auguste de Creuse’s oil portrait of Marie‑Marguerite de Cossé‑Brissac, duchesse de Villeroy (1648–1708), was executed in 1839. The work, now part of the collection at the Palace of Versailles, presents the 17th‑century noblewoman in a formal pose against a dark backdrop that isolates her figure.

Subject & Meaning

The sitter is shown with tightly curled hair, a pearl necklace and a white lace bodice, elements that signal her aristocratic status and the fashion of her era. The composition emphasizes her dignified bearing, reflecting the conventions of portraiture intended to convey lineage and rank.

Technique & Style

Creuse employs the Romantic sensibility of early‑19th‑century French painting, using oil to achieve a rich modelling of flesh and fabric. Fine brushwork renders the intricate lace pattern on the bodice, while subtle chiaroscuro enhances the three‑dimensionality of the figure against the somber background.

History & Provenance

Trained in the academic tradition and later associated with the court of Versailles, Creuse specialized in historical portraits for the royal palace. This particular portrait was commissioned to honor the duchess and entered the Versailles holdings shortly after its completion, where it remains on display.

Context

The painting belongs to a broader 19th‑century French effort to memorialize earlier members of the nobility through contemporary portraiture. By portraying a 17th‑century figure with the precision of Romantic realism, Creuse links past aristocratic heritage with the artistic values of his own time.
