About this work
Overview
Auguste de Creuse’s 1837 oil portrait presents Susanne de Baudéan, a woman who lived from 1625 to 1700. Executed in the early nineteenth‑century French academic tradition, the painting now belongs to the historical portrait assemblage at the Palace of Versailles. The composition centers the sitter against a dark backdrop, allowing her features and attire to dominate the visual field.
Subject & Meaning
The work captures a refined lady with pale skin and loosely curled, light‑brown hair, dressed in an off‑the‑shoulder gown. A string of pearls encircles her neck and a decorative brooch rests on her chest, symbols of status and cultivated taste in her era. The portrait conveys both personal dignity and the social expectations of aristocratic femininity.
Technique & Style
De Creuse employs a smooth, polished brushwork typical of his academic training under Antoine‑Jean Gros. The chiaroscuro of the deep background against the illuminated figure creates a three‑dimensional presence. Fine detailing on the pearls and fabric demonstrates a careful observation of texture, while the overall palette remains restrained, emphasizing the sitter’s elegance.
History & Provenance
Created in 1837, the portrait entered the royal collection that later formed part of Versailles’ historical portrait gallery. Its acquisition reflects the nineteenth‑century interest in documenting notable figures from earlier French history, linking contemporary artistic practice with the memory of the Ancien Régime.
Context
The painting emerges at a time when French artists were revisiting the past to reinforce national identity. By portraying a seventeenth‑century noblewoman, de Creuse participates in a broader cultural project that celebrated lineage and heritage, aligning with the Restoration’s emphasis on tradition and the visual reinforcement of aristocratic values.
