This painting shows three big blocks of color. On the left is a flat red rectangle. In the middle, a white band is packed with red and green circles of the same size. On the right, a green rectangle mirrors the red one. The shapes are sharp and clean, with no shading or blending.

The circles in the middle are arranged in a grid but don’t line up perfectly. They look like they were stamped on, not painted by hand. This piece is one of 13 prints made the same way in 1968.

Overview

Untitled is a 1968 screenprint by Canadian artist Bertram Charles Binning, part of a portfolio of 13 similar prints.

Subject & Meaning

The print features three rectangular blocks of color: a red rectangle on the left, a white band with a grid of red and green circles in the center, and a mirrored green rectangle on the right. The circles are evenly sized but irregularly aligned.

Technique & Style

The print's clean, sharp shapes and uniform circles suggest a mechanical process, characteristic of screenprinting. One print in the portfolio includes hand additions, but this work does not.

History & Provenance

The print is held in The Museum of Modern Art's collection. Binning created it in 1968, during a period when he was working in semi-abstract styles, having shifted from drawing and earlier painting approaches after 1946.
