About this work
Overview
This photograph by Herbert Rose Barraud depicts Fanny Leslie, an actress whose image was captured during the Victorian era when studio portraiture was a new and popular medium. Produced as an albumen print on card backing, the image belongs to a genre of mass-produced portraits known as cartes de visite, which were widely collected in the 1860s before being replaced by larger cabinet cards in the late 1870s. The photograph is part of a larger collection assembled by Guy Tristram Little, whose donated materials formed a significant portion of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s theatrical holdings.
