About this work

Overview

The work is a watercolour combined with pen‑and‑ink and pencil, portraying two anthropomorphic mice at the threshold of a vole’s nest.

The work is a watercolour combined with pen‑and‑ink and pencil, portraying two anthropomorphic mice at the threshold of a vole’s nest. One mouse, dressed in a grey‑blue greatcoat, carries a Gladstone bag, walking stick and umbrella wrapped in a patterned travelling rug, while the other, a field vole, gestures with its forepaws beside wheat stalks. The scene is set within an irregular border of moss, grasses and ivy‑leafed toadflax.

Subject & Meaning

The composition contrasts rural and urban life through the two mouse figures: the country mouse, modest and rooted in the wheat field, and the town mouse, attired in travel gear, suggesting a journey from city to countryside. Their interaction, with the vole gesturing and the town mouse holding a bag, evokes the classic fable of differing lifestyles and the exchange of hospitality between country and city dwellers.

Technique & Style

Executed in muted watercolour washes, the piece employs delicate pen‑and‑ink line work over a pencil sketch, giving the figures crisp outlines against soft, blended backgrounds. Brushstrokes are gentle, rendering foliage and wheat in subtle tones, while the asymmetrical border of greens and browns frames the central action, creating a harmonious balance between detail and atmosphere.

History & Provenance

The drawing entered the National Book League’s collection through a 1970 donation by Leslie Linder, forming part of the Linder Collection. From 1989 until 2019 the collection, including this work, was on long‑term loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, where it was displayed as part of the institution’s illustration holdings.
