Rendered with loose, rapid brushwork that retains a sketch‑like quality, the watercolour employs an earthy palette of greens, browns, and yellows, punctuated by subtle blue accents in the distant hills. The underlying pencil drawing defines the forms, while the transparent washes convey atmospheric light and texture across foliage and ground.

The drawing entered the National Book League’s holdings in 1970 through a donation by collector Leslie Linder. It formed part of a larger assemblage of 279 drawings and 38 early editions associated with the literary and artistic output of Beatrix Potter, collectively known as the Linder Collection.

Although unsigned, the piece aligns with the tradition of British naturalistic watercolours that document rural landscapes in the early twentieth century. Its focus on a specific tree and surrounding terrain reflects the period’s interest in detailed observation of the countryside, a theme also evident in Potter’s own illustrative work.
