About this work
Overview
Created in 1893, this watercolour by Beatrix Potter portrays a hinged wicker basket rendered in delicate pencil and wash. The composition isolates the basket, which is split into two oval compartments, while a sizable blank label hangs from the hinge, partially obscuring the upper portion. The work exemplifies Potter’s early interest in rendering everyday objects with precise observation.
Subject & Meaning
The drawing focuses on a functional object—a woven basket with a spiral weave and a smaller circular rim that suggests a lid or handle. By omitting decorative background and concentrating on texture, the piece invites viewers to consider the material qualities of the basket and the subtle interplay between utility and form.
Technique & Style
Potter combines pencil underdrawing with transparent watercolour washes to achieve a realistic surface texture. Fine brushstrokes delineate the interlaced reeds, while the limited palette emphasizes the natural tones of the material. The restrained composition and attention to detail reflect a study approach rather than narrative illustration.
History & Provenance
The watercolour entered the public domain through a donation by Leslie Linder to the National Book League—now the Book Trust—in 1970, forming part of the Linder Collection of 279 drawings and 38 early editions. From 1989 to 2019 the collection was on long‑term loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum via the Linder Trust.
Context
Produced during Potter’s formative years, the drawing predates her fame as a children’s author and illustrator. It illustrates her early practice of observing and recording commonplace objects, a skill that later informed the detailed settings of her literary works.
