The portrait was painted by Bernard van Orley, a Brussels‑based artist active in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Van Orley was a leading figure among the Romanists, Flemish painters who assimilated Italian Renaissance influences without traveling to Italy. The work entered the Detroit Institute of Arts’ collection in the twentieth century, where it remains on view.

Van Orley’s career spanned painting, tapestry design, and later stained‑glass production, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of Flemish artistic workshops.
