About this work

Overview

Caravaggio's oil painting, David and Goliath, created around 1600, depicts the biblical hero triumphant over his defeated adversary. This work, sometimes referred to by alternative titles such as David with the Head of Goliath, is a significant example of the Italian Baroque master's early career. It is currently housed in the collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid.

Subject & Meaning

A youthful David, clad in a white garment, stands with one foot resting upon the severed head of the giant Goliath.

The canvas captures the moment following David's victory. A youthful David, clad in a white garment, stands with one foot resting upon the severed head of the giant Goliath. His sword, held firmly, points towards Goliath's forehead. Goliath's head, eyes open and mouth slightly parted, lies on the ground, conveying the finality of his defeat. The composition emphasizes David's youthful strength against the formidable, now lifeless, foe.

Technique & Style

Caravaggio employs the dramatic contrast of light and shadow, known as chiaroscuro, to heighten the painting's emotional intensity. A subtle light source emerges from the deep background, illuminating the figures and emphasizing the stark difference between David's triumphant stance and Goliath's inert form. This technique creates a sense of immediate drama and tension, drawing the viewer into the scene and underscoring the gravity of the biblical narrative.

Legacy

The theme of David's victory over Goliath was one Caravaggio revisited throughout his career. Beyond the Prado's version, the artist produced at least two other notable oil paintings on the same subject. These later interpretations, also titled David with the Head of Goliath, are preserved in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and the Galleria Borghese in Rome, demonstrating the enduring significance of this biblical narrative for the artist.
