About this work

Overview

On the Thames is a watercolour painting created by George Chambers in 1833, featuring a vibrant scene along the River Thames.

Subject & Meaning

The painting captures a bustling river scene with a large sailing ship moored near a wooden dock, where people are active within the open dock building. The calm water, populated by a few birds, and a serene light blue sky with soft clouds, convey a sense of tranquility amidst activity.

Technique & Style

Chambers executed the work using loose, watery brushstrokes, characteristic of 19th-century watercolour practices, which imbue the scene with a dreamy quality.

History & Provenance

Signed and dated by the artist, the watercolour was later part of Richard Ellison’s collection of 100 British watercolours. Following his death, his widow donated the collection in two parts (1860 and 1873) to contribute to the founding of a national watercolour collection.
