About this work

Overview

Adriaen Collaert’s 1582 engraving, titled Design for a Pendant with a Sea‑Monster Carrying Neptune Flanked by Two Nereids, presents a complex mythological tableau intended for decorative jewelry. The image is composed as a detailed line drawing, suitable for transfer onto a pendant setting.

Subject & Meaning

At the centre of the composition a massive sea creature rises from tumultuous waves, its open maw and curled horns framing a seated figure of Neptune.

At the centre of the composition a massive sea creature rises from tumultuous waves, its open maw and curled horns framing a seated figure of Neptune. The god, muscular and armed with a trident, clutches a rope that leads to an elaborate crown positioned above, suggesting dominion over the chaotic marine realm. Flanking the monster are two diminutive Nereids, half‑human, half‑fish, each grasping sea‑weed and shells, reinforcing the oceanic theme.

Technique & Style

Collaert employs fine, intersecting lines to model light and shadow, creating a strong contrast that gives the forms a three‑dimensional quality despite the flat medium. The engraving’s ornamental borders—swirling ribbons and decorative motifs—frame the central scene and reflect the late‑Renaissance taste for intricate, ornamental designs.

History & Provenance

The print was produced in the late sixteenth century, a period when Collaert, a Flemish engraver, frequently supplied designs for metalwork and jewelry. While the original pendant for which it was intended has not survived, the engraving itself has been preserved in several print collections, documenting the artist’s role in translating mythological imagery into wearable art.

Context

Mythological subjects such as Neptune and sea‑monsters were popular in Northern European decorative arts of the 1500s, serving both as displays of erudition and as symbols of power over nature. Collaert’s work aligns with contemporary trends that merged classical iconography with the ornate aesthetic favored by patrons of the Habsburg courts.
