Madonna and Child with Cradle and a Bagpiper on Horseback is a drawing by the Northern Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer. It dates from 1512 and is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

About this work

Overview

The drawing presents two distinct vignettes within a single composition: a serene study of the Virgin Mary nursing the infant Christ occupies the lower left, while a rider on a horse, playing a bagpipe, advances slowly toward the right. The juxtaposition of a quiet devotional scene with a lively, mobile figure creates a contrast between stillness and motion.

Subject & Meaning

The intimate portrayal of Mary and the Christ Child reflects traditional religious iconography, emphasizing maternal care. Adjacent to this, the bagpiping horseman introduces a secular, perhaps folkloric element, suggesting a narrative that blends sacred devotion with everyday activity, inviting viewers to contemplate the coexistence of the divine and the mundane.

Technique & Style

Executed on thin paper bearing a Nuremberg watermark, the drawing demonstrates fine linear work characteristic of Northern Renaissance draftsmen. The lines convey both delicate flesh tones in the Virgin’s study and the dynamic posture of the rider, while the later mounting on modern paper and a V&A drystamp indicate subsequent conservation measures.

History & Provenance

Initially owned by collector Willibald Imhoff, the drawing entered the Imperial collections before passing to Baron Vivant Denon. It later belonged to the Rev. Alexander Dyce, who bequeathed it in 1869. Authentication was provided by Sidney Montagu Peartree, and the piece now bears a Victoria and Albert Museum drystamp, confirming its inclusion in that institution’s holdings.
