History & Provenance

El Greco created the Doña María de Aragón Altarpiece between 1596 and 1599 for its original placement in the chapel of the Colegio de la Encarnación in Madrid. Over time, the altarpiece was dismantled, leading to the dispersal of its constituent panels. While one canvas is no longer extant, five of the six surviving large paintings are now held by the Museo del Prado in Madrid, and the sixth is located in the National Museum of Art of Romania in Bucharest.
