Quellinus employs a restrained chiaroscuro, allowing the illuminated figure to emerge from a deep, neutral background. The handling of light on the fabric and hair creates a tactile sense of texture, while the smooth modeling of the face reflects the influence of his master, Peter Paul Rubens, merged with a more measured Flemish sensibility.

Erasmus Quellinus II (1607–1678) trained in Rubens’s workshop and rose to prominence after Rubens’s death in 1640, becoming a leading painter of history scenes, allegories, and portraits. *Kanoniker* entered the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp’s collection through acquisition in the 19th century, where it remains on display as a representative example of mid‑17th‑century Flemish portraiture.
