About this work

Overview

Heinrich von Förster’s drawing, dated around 1874, depicts the Music Room belonging to Archduchess Margarete, Princess of Saxony, as it appeared in the Ambras Castle. Executed on cream‑colored wove paper, the work combines watercolor, gouache, and metallic pigments applied over a graphite sketch, with areas of scraped surface and gum medium to modulate texture.

Subject & Meaning

A modest table bears assorted objects, while a piano occupies the far wall, suggesting a space designed for private musical performance.

The scene presents an opulent 19th‑century salon: warm wooden paneling lines the walls, a geometric‑patterned ceiling rises overhead, and a green tiled stove glows beside a blue upholstered chair. A modest table bears assorted objects, while a piano occupies the far wall, suggesting a space designed for private musical performance. Light filters through open windows, revealing a tranquil view of surrounding trees.

Technique & Style

Förster layered transparent watercolor washes with opaque gouache, building color through successive glazing. Metallic paint was applied selectively to the stove and chandelier, creating a reflective sheen that contrasts with the overall soft tonal palette. Scraping and the use of gum medium reveal portions of the underlying paper, adding subtle highlights and depth to the interior’s surfaces.

History & Provenance

The drawing forms part of the Ambras Castle collection, documenting the personal quarters of a Habsburg‑Saxon archduchess. Though the work’s early ownership record is limited, it has remained associated with the Schloss Ambras holdings, serving as a visual record of the palace’s interior decoration during the late nineteenth century.
