About this work
Overview
Created in 1927 by Ukrainian painter Fedir Krychevsky, *Сім'я* (Family) is part of the National Art Museum of Ukraine’s collection. Executed during the artist’s early modernist phase, the canvas presents a domestic scene that emphasizes relational closeness through its muted palette and balanced arrangement of figures.
Subject & Meaning
At the centre of the composition a woman and a child, both dressed in white, share a quiet moment. Flanking them are two men in dark hair, each in white shirts and black trousers, suggesting a familial grouping. The positioning and gentle gestures convey an atmosphere of affection and unity within the household.
Technique & Style
Krychevsky employs a restrained colour scheme, using soft, light‑toned backgrounds to focus attention on the figures. The brushwork is smooth, with clear delineation of forms, reflecting the early modernist tendency toward simplified shapes and a calm, orderly visual language that enhances the scene’s intimate tone.
History & Provenance
After its completion, the painting entered the holdings of the National Art Museum of Ukraine, where it remains on display. Its acquisition aligns with the museum’s effort to preserve works that illustrate the development of Ukrainian modernism in the interwar period.
