About this work
Overview
John Flaxman’s *Sheet of Studies* (1790) is a small drawing executed in graphite, with additional ink and wash applied to both the front and back of the paper. The work consists of a series of rapid, informal sketches that were never completed, serving as preparatory notes rather than finished compositions. The paper shows light staining and uneven line work, indicating a quick, exploratory hand.
Subject & Meaning
The ambiguous nature of the subjects points to Flaxman’s experimentation with human and mythological motifs that would later appear in his illustration work.
The sketches depict a variety of loosely rendered figures. At the top of the sheet two crouching forms are positioned near a stylised tree branch, while lower down three additional shapes appear, one suggesting a standing human figure and another resembling a small animal or a throne-like object. The ambiguous nature of the subjects points to Flaxman’s experimentation with human and mythological motifs that would later appear in his illustration work.
Technique & Style
Flaxman employs graphite for the primary contours, varying pressure to create both bold and faint strokes. Ink and wash are added in a haphazard manner, producing areas of darker tonal contrast alongside the lighter graphite lines. The overall approach is characteristic of his neoclassical training: a focus on clear line and controlled form, yet the looseness of the marks reveals a more spontaneous, sketch‑like mode of working.
History & Provenance
Created during Flaxman’s early career, the sheet reflects his transition from modelling pottery for Josiah Wedgwood to his later period in Rome, where he began producing book illustrations. Although the drawing was not intended for public display, it survives as evidence of his preparatory practice. Its provenance traces back to private collections of Flaxman’s papers before entering a museum archive in the early twentieth century.
