About this work

This is a tempera painting by Francisco Goya from around 1805. It’s one of four works made for a waiting room in Manuel Godoy’s home.

Two young women sit threading spinning wheels in a half-lit room. Their faces are hard to see, and older women lurk in the dark behind them.

Goya often used tempera in small, careful works. Look up Francisco Goya next.

Overview

Created circa 1805, this tempera on canvas is a circular tondo by Francisco Goya. It formed part of a quartet of allegorical works commissioned for the waiting room of Manuel Godoy, the Spanish prime minister under Charles IV. Since 1932 the painting has been housed in Madrid’s Museo del Prado.

Subject & Meaning

The composition depicts two young women operating spinning wheels within a dim interior, their activity illuminated by a large window on the left. In the shadowed background, indistinct older figures appear, their identities ambiguous—whether they represent seasoned laborers or symbolic embodiments of the tapestry and canvas remains uncertain.

Technique & Style

Executed in tempera, Goya employs the medium’s fine, controlled brushwork to render delicate textures and subtle chiaroscuro. The circular format focuses the viewer’s eye on the central activity, while the contrast between light from the window and the surrounding gloom emphasizes the theme of productive labor amid uncertainty.

History & Provenance

The work was originally displayed in Godoy’s residence, serving a decorative and ideological function that celebrated scientific and economic advancement. After changing hands over the 19th and early 20th centuries, it entered the Prado’s collection in 1932, where it remains part of the museum’s permanent holdings.
