Francken employs the vigorous brushwork and dramatic chiaroscuro typical of Baroque art, using a dark, cloud‑filled sky and a distant blaze to heighten tension. The crowded foreground, with its tangled figures and snarling dogs, creates a sense of movement, while the rugged rock formations frame the narrative and guide the viewer’s eye toward the central hero.

Created during a prolific phase in Francken’s career, when he produced both large altarpieces and smaller mythological scenes, the painting eventually entered the collection of the Alte Pinakothek. Its acquisition reflects the museum’s focus on representing the breadth of Flemish Baroque output, preserving a work that illustrates the artist’s collaborative and narrative strengths.
