Géza Dósa, who studied in Vienna and Munich between 1866 and 1869, completed the work shortly before his untimely death in 1871. After his passing, the painting entered the holdings of the Hungarian National Gallery, where it remains on display. Recognition of Dósa’s oeuvre grew gradually, gaining broader appreciation only decades later.

The portrait emerges from the late‑19th‑century realist movement, which favored direct observation over idealization.
