About this work

Overview

Created circa 1650 by the Flemish painter Gerard Seghers, this oil on canvas presents a compact religious grouping known as the Holy Family accompanied by Saint Francis of Assisi. The work belongs to the Flemish Baroque period and is part of the permanent collection of Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum.

Subject & Meaning

The composition brings together five figures in a dimly lit, rocky landscape. A woman in a vivid red garment cradles a nude infant, while a second child kneels nearby. Behind them stand an elderly bearded man and a bearded, haloed figure—identified as Saint Francis—observing the scene, underscoring themes of piety and familial devotion.

Technique & Style

Seghers employs a pronounced chiaroscuro, contrasting a focused light that illuminates the central figures with deep, textured shadows that recede into the background. The handling of flesh tones, especially the pallid skin of the infant, is rendered with delicate modeling, while the surrounding rock and drapery are depicted in coarser, more atmospheric brushwork, reflecting his Caravaggesque training.

History & Provenance

Originally active in the Caravaggisti circle after a period of study in Italy, Seghers later turned to large altarpieces for ecclesiastical patrons. This smaller devotional piece eventually entered the Kunsthistorisches Museum’s holdings, where it remains on display as a representative example of his mid‑career output.
