About this work

Overview

Gerbrand van den Eeckhout, a Dutch painter of the mid‑17th century and a prominent pupil of Rembrandt, completed the oil painting *Mercury and Argus* in 1666. The canvas, now part of the Gemäldegalerie collection in Berlin, portrays a quiet episode drawn from classical mythology, rendered in a restrained palette and careful observation of landscape.

Subject & Meaning

The scene shows the god Mercury seated on a rock, his bare torso wrapped only in a simple cloth, holding a staff and gazing at a white cow.

The scene shows the god Mercury seated on a rock, his bare torso wrapped only in a simple cloth, holding a staff and gazing at a white cow. Nearby, the giant Argus lies prostrate, clutching his head, his own torso similarly draped. The composition alludes to the myth in which Mercury, sent by Zeus, slays the all‑seeing Argus, a narrative often interpreted as the triumph of cunning over vigilant surveillance.

Technique & Style

Van den Eeckhout employs a realistic, almost tactile approach, emphasizing texture in the figures’ skin, the roughness of the rock, and the foliage beyond. Muted earth tones of brown and green dominate, while subtle chiaroscuro models the bodies, a legacy of his master Rembrandt’s influence. The detailed rendering of the landscape and the careful handling of light create a calm, measured atmosphere.

History & Provenance

After its execution in 1666, the painting entered private collections before being acquired by the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, where it remains on display. Its attribution to van den Eeckhout has been consistently affirmed by scholars, linking the work to the artist’s mature period and his engagement with mythological subjects alongside his more common biblical and genre scenes.
