Mercury and Argus

Mercury and Argus is an oil painting by the Flemish Baroque painting artist Peter Paul Rubens. It dates from 1635 and is held in the collection of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.
About this work
Overview
Peter Paul Rubens’ oil on panel, created between 1635 and 1638, captures a moment from Ovid’s Metamorphoses in which the messenger god Mercury confronts the watchful giant Argus. The composition places Mercury, clad in a red drapery, playing his flute while Argus lies asleep beside a white heifer, set against a softly lit, wooded landscape.
Subject & Meaning
The work visualises the myth in which Zeus, enamoured of Io, disguises her as a white cow. Hera entrusts the animal to Argus, whose many eyes guard it. Zeus dispatches Mercury, who soothes Argus with music before beheading him, thereby freeing the transformed Io. Rubens emphasizes the tension between deception and divine intervention.
Technique & Style
Rubens employs his characteristic chiaroscuro, using warm, diffused light to model the figures against a darker background. The palette of reds, earth tones, and muted greens creates a harmonious atmosphere, while the soft shadows lend volume to Mercury’s drapery and Argus’s reclining form. The brushwork is fluid, especially in the rendering of foliage and cloud formations.
History & Provenance
The panel entered the collection of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, where it remains on display. A contemporaneous canvas version of the same subject, painted by Rubens between 1636 and 1638, is housed in Madrid’s Prado Museum. Both pieces have been recognized as part of the BBC’s “100 Great Paintings” series.
Context
Rubens produced the painting during his late Flemish period, a time when he frequently revisited classical narratives for courtly patrons. The dual treatment of the same myth on panel and canvas reflects his practice of exploring variations in composition and dramatic emphasis, catering to differing patronage and exhibition contexts.
