About this work
Overview
Created between 1502 and 1505, this oil painting by Giorgione portrays the biblical episode known as the Judgment of Solomon. It is part of the collection of the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence and is paired with a companion work, Test of Fire of Moses, also housed there.
Subject & Meaning
The scene shows King Solomon seated on his throne, surrounded by court officials, while two women vie for the same infant. Solomon’s adjudication—ordering the child to be divided—reveals the deceitful claimant, illustrating the king’s reputed wisdom and the moral of discerning truth.
Technique & Style
Executed in oil, the composition balances figures against a landscape divided by two prominent oak trees. The handling of light and color reflects the Venetian practice of glazing, creating depth and subtle tonal transitions. A Ferrarese assistant contributed to the rendering of the human forms.
History & Provenance
Since its early 16th‑century completion, the painting has remained in Florence, entering the Uffizi’s holdings where it has been displayed alongside its pendant. Documentation notes the collaborative involvement of a Ferrarese workshop member in the figure work.
