Piazzetta employs strong chiaroscuro, using deep shadows to model the face and hands while the background recedes into near‑blackness. The contrast of light on the white collar and the illuminated skin creates a three‑dimensional effect, typical of the late Baroque interest in dramatic lighting and tactile surface.

Created in the early eighteenth century, the study entered the Alte Pinakothek’s holdings in the 19th century, where it has remained in the museum’s Baroque collection. Documentation traces its acquisition to a purchase from a private collection, though the sitter’s identity remains unknown.

The work belongs to a period when Piazzetta produced numerous studies of heads and figures for larger compositions. Such studies were often used as preparatory sketches or independent character studies, reflecting the artist’s skill in rendering age, texture, and emotional nuance.
