Giovanni Battista Tiepzo’s oil on canvas, completed in 1770, depicts the legendary encounter between Alexander the Great and the philosopher Diogenes. The work is part of the State Hermitage Museum’s collection in St. Petersburg. Central to the composition is a barrel‑reclining figure gesturing toward a fully armed Alexander, while a small crowd in classical dress observes the exchange beneath a bright sky.

Subject & Meaning

The painting visualises the anecdote in which Diogenes, living in a simple barrel, rebuffs Alexander’s offer of any wish, replying that the ruler should simply “move out of my sunlight.” Tiepolo captures the contrast between imperial power and philosophical asceticism, emphasizing the philosopher’s calm defiance against the conqueror’s grandeur.

Technique & Style

Executed in oil, the canvas displays Tiepolo’s characteristic luminous palette and fluid brushwork. Vivid blues dominate the sky, while warm earth tones render the stone architecture and figures’ garments. The artist’s handling of light creates a sense of atmospheric depth, and the visible strokes lend texture to the armor and drapery, hallmark traits of his late Rococo sensibility.

History & Provenance

Created toward the end of Tiepolo’s career, the work entered the Russian imperial collection in the early 19th century and has remained in the State Hermitage Museum since. Its presence in the museum reflects the 18th‑century European fascination with classical subjects and the patronage networks that brought Italian masterpieces to the Russian court.
