About this work
Overview
Created in 1760, *Portrait d’un page* is an oil painting by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, a leading figure of the late Rococo. The work is part of the Uffizi Gallery’s holdings in Florence. It presents a solitary figure rendered against a dark backdrop, allowing the sitter’s attire and expression to dominate the composition.
Subject & Meaning
The canvas portrays a youthful page, identified by the delicate dress, ruffled collar and a small hat tied with a ribbon. The figure turns slightly toward the viewer’s right, gaze fixed in the same direction, while the expression remains neutral, suggesting a restrained, perhaps contemplative presence rather than overt narrative.
Technique & Style
Tiepolo employs a subtle chiaroscuro, contrasting the luminous clothing with the enveloping darkness behind the sitter. The handling of light creates a three‑dimensional effect on the fabric and facial features. Brushwork is smooth and refined, characteristic of Rococo elegance, yet the overall tone leans toward sobriety rather than frivolity.
History & Provenance
The painting entered the Uffizi collection at an early stage, though precise acquisition details remain sparse. It has been displayed among other works by the Tiepolo family, underscoring Giovanni Domenico’s position as the son of the celebrated Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and his continuation of the family’s artistic legacy.
Context
Executed during the waning years of the Rococo, the portrait reflects the period’s shift toward more intimate, private subjects. While the decorative exuberance of earlier Rococo works is muted here, the emphasis on refined rendering and personal presence aligns with broader European trends toward portraiture that emphasized individuality and modesty.
