Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo’s *The Descent from the Cross* (1772) is an oil‑on‑canvas work belonging to the late Rococo period. The composition captures the biblical moment when Christ’s lifeless body is lowered from the crucifix, surrounded by mourners and the implements of the Passion, such as a ladder and a Roman spear. The painting is part of the Museo del Prado’s permanent collection in Madrid.
Subject & Meaning
The scene focuses on the central figure of Christ, his head crowned with thorns and his side bearing the wound of the spear. Figures in simple robes support his body while others look on, emphasizing the collective sorrow and reverence of the disciples and followers at the moment of his removal from the cross.
Technique & Style
Tiepolo employs a pronounced chiaroscuro, juxtaposing a luminous, almost celestial light that bathes the Christ figure against the darker, shadowed forms of the surrounding mourners. The contrast heightens the drama of the event, while the soft, pastel palette and graceful gestures reflect the Rococo’s characteristic elegance and decorative sensibility.
History & Provenance
Executed in 1772, the painting was created by the younger Tiepolo, who inherited his father Giovanni Battista’s workshop and artistic approach. After its completion, the canvas entered the Spanish royal collection and eventually was transferred to the Museo del Prado, where it remains on display for public viewing.
