About this work

Overview

The work depicts a lion with its mouth agape and eyes bright, rendered in a compact composition that emphasizes the animal’s mane and facial expression. Short, brisk brushstrokes build up the dense hair, while a limited palette of browns, chestnut tones and creamy whites creates a sense of volume and texture.

Subject & Meaning

The lion is presented in an alert pose, its gaze directed upward, suggesting a moment of heightened awareness. The contrast between the glossy wetness of the nose and mouth and the matte fur highlights the creature’s vitality, while the lack of overt narrative leaves the focus on the animal’s physical presence.

Technique & Style

The painter employs a loose, linear application of paint, with the mane’s darkest sections rendered in undefined black planes that soften toward the face. Subtle chiaroscuro in the chestnut hues provides shadow and highlight, giving the fur a realistic depth despite the overall blunt facture.

History & Provenance

Although a later addition of a signature attributes the piece to French animalist Jean‑Baptiste Oudry, scholarly research identifies the hand of Italian court painter Giuseppe Baldrighi. Baldrighi, employed by the Dukes of Parma, traveled to Paris in 1752 where he studied with leading French artists, including Oudry, influencing his series of animal studies.

Context

Baldrighi’s lion reflects the cross‑cultural exchange between Italian and French academic circles in the mid‑18th century. By adopting Oudry’s smooth handling yet retaining a more linear, less psychologically nuanced approach, the work illustrates how artists adapted foreign styles to suit courtly tastes while contributing to the broader tradition of animal portraiture.
