A Boy Blowing on a Firebrand to Light a Candle

The subtle gradations of glow from the firebrand and candle reveal the artist’s mastery of rendering candlelight, a hallmark of the Leiden fijnschilders, whose meticulous brushwork creates a tactile sense of texture and atmosphere.

The painting belongs to the Dutch Golden Age and reflects Schalcken’s reputation for intimate genre scenes.
