About this work

Overview

Herman Doncker, a Dutch painter active in Haarlem during the mid‑17th century, executed the oil on canvas work *Two Boys in a Landscape* around 1650. The painting belongs to the landscape genre and is part of the Walters Art Museum’s collection.

Subject & Meaning

The composition presents two young boys standing in an open setting. The taller figure, dressed in a dark coat with a white collar and red stockings, rests a hand in his pocket, while the shorter boy, also in dark attire with a white collar but blue stockings, holds a long staff. Both gaze directly forward, giving the scene a formal, contemplative tone.

Technique & Style

Doncker employs oil paint with a relatively loose brushwork that allows the muted palette of browns, grays and subtle reds to emerge. The landscape background features trees and a body of water rendered in soft, atmospheric tones, creating a balanced contrast between the figures and their surroundings.

History & Provenance

Doncker signed many of his works as “H. Doncker” or “HD” and was known for portrait commissions, including those for the council of Enkhuizen. *Two Boys in a Landscape* entered the Walters Art Museum collection, where it remains on display.
