About this work
Overview
Danaë is an oil on canvas painting created by French artist Jacques Blanchard between 1631 and 1633. It is now held in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, France.
Subject & Meaning
The painting depicts a scene from mythology where Danaë receives Jupiter in the form of a golden shower, resulting in the conception of Perseus.
History & Provenance
A second version of Danaë, also attributed to Blanchard, is held in the Blanton Art Museum, Texas. The attribution was confirmed after a restoration in 2012 revealed a putto and Jupiter, consistent with Blanchard's style.
Context
The attribution of the Blanton Danaë has been debated, with some attributing it to Virginia da Vezzo, the wife of Simon Vouet, although Blanchard's authorship is supported by stylistic evidence.
