Callot employed fine-line etching to render minute details: individual sails, rigging, and figures on deck. Strong contrasts between inked shadows and bare paper create depth and tension, characteristic of early Baroque printmaking. Commissioned by Louis XIII’s court, Callot’s series was intended to glorify the crown’s victory after a grueling eighteen-month siege. The plates were widely distributed as printed records of state power. Plate 11 entered the Cleveland Museum of Art’s collection in the 20th century, having passed through private European collections since its original publication.

The siege marked a turning point in France’s religious wars, ending Huguenot political autonomy. Callot, working under royal patronage, documented the campaign with unusual immediacy, avoiding idealized heroism. His prints circulated among military elites and the educated public, serving both as propaganda and as a visual chronicle of early modern warfare.

Callot’s series influenced later war imagery through its unflinching detail and narrative coherence. While not widely known today, the plates remain important examples of 17th-century printmaking’s capacity to document conflict with both precision and emotional weight, bridging journalistic observation and artistic composition.
