Porto Maurizia. From the journey to Italy

Executed with oil on canvas, the painting displays a textured surface where thick brushstrokes are evident, especially in the sky and foliage. Ciągliński’s approach reflects post‑impressionist tendencies, employing loose handling of paint and a restrained color scheme that aligns with early Russian Impressionism while retaining a personal, atmospheric quality.

After its completion, the work entered the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw, where it remains part of the institution’s holdings. Ciągliński, active under the reigns of Tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II, produced the piece during a period of extensive travel that informed much of his landscape output.

The late nineteenth century saw a growing interest among Russian and Polish artists in European travel and the adoption of Impressionist techniques. Ciągliński’s Italian scenes, including this view of Porto Maurizia, illustrate the cross‑cultural exchange that shaped his artistic development and contributed to the broader diffusion of Impressionist ideas in Eastern Europe.
