About this work

Overview

A lone woman, clad in a dark dress and a red headscarf, bends over a field of golden wheat, her work reflected in a bundle of cut stalks at her feet.

Created in 1891, *Reaping* is an oil painting by Joaquim Vayreda i Vila that portrays a quiet agricultural labor scene. A lone woman, clad in a dark dress and a red headscarf, bends over a field of golden wheat, her work reflected in a bundle of cut stalks at her feet. The composition is set against a modest horizon of trees, distant structures, and an overcast sky, conveying a calm, bucolic atmosphere.

Subject & Meaning

The work focuses on the act of harvesting, emphasizing the dignity of rural labor. The solitary figure, positioned centrally, draws attention to the physical effort required in reaping, while the muted landscape and soft clouds suggest a timeless, unhurried rhythm of countryside life. The painting invites contemplation of the relationship between humans and the land that sustains them.

Technique & Style

Vayreda employs warm, earthy tones and gentle brushwork to render the wheat’s texture and the sky’s diffused light. His handling of oil paint creates subtle gradations that suggest depth without sharp contrasts, a trait inherited from his early Barbizon influences and later refined within the post‑impressionist tendencies of the Olot school. The overall effect is a harmonious blend of color and form that enhances the scene’s tranquility.

History & Provenance

After its completion, the canvas entered the collection of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, where it remains on display. Vayreda, originally trained under the Barbizon tradition, later co‑founded the Olot school, a regional movement that contributed to the development of post‑impressionism in Spain. *Reaping* thus represents both a personal milestone for the artist and a documented piece of Catalan artistic heritage.
