Since its creation, the portrait has remained in German collections, eventually entering the holdings of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The museum acquired the piece as part of its effort to represent early nineteenth‑century German painting, preserving Tischbein’s contribution to the period’s visual culture.

Tischbein belonged to a prolific family of artists and was active during a time when middle‑class patronage encouraged intimate family portraits.
