Created circa 1650, this oil painting by Johannes Lingam Bach presents a tranquil rural scene set along a narrow country lane. The composition features a small group of travelers—figures on foot, a woman seated on a donkey, a man in a red vest, and a child—accompanied by pack animals and modest cargo. The work is part of the Rijksmuseum’s collection and exemplifies the landscape genre popular among Dutch painters working in Rome during the mid‑seventeenth century.

Subject & Meaning

The picture captures a moment of everyday movement: a woman balances a bundle while riding a donkey, a man leans on a staff, and another guides a laden pack donkey bearing barrels. A kneeling child adds a touch of domestic intimacy. The arrangement of trees and the soft sky suggest a journey through a pastoral setting, hinting at trade or travel rather than a narrative episode, aligning with the Bamboccianti focus on genre scenes of ordinary life.

Technique & Style

Lingam Bach employs a subtle chiaroscuro, allowing light to strike faces and fabrics while casting surrounding areas in gentle shadow. This contrast creates a luminous quality on the figures’ clothing and the animal hides, enhancing the sense of depth. The brushwork is fine in the rendering of foliage and sky, yet looser in the depiction of the donkeys and barrels, balancing detail with atmospheric ambience typical of Dutch landscape painters active in Italy.

History & Provenance

The artist, a Dutch expatriate linked to the second generation of the Bamboccianti in Rome, produced the work during his Roman period, when many Northern painters documented Italian countryside life. After changing hands through private collections, the painting entered the Rijksmuseum’s holdings, where it remains on display as part of the museum’s representation of 17th‑century Dutch landscape painting.
