About this work

Overview

Joseph Albrier’s 1837 oil portrait presents Bernardin Gigault de Bellefonds, a 17th‑century French marshal. The sitter is rendered in a formal pose, his dark hair and solemn expression framed by a cloudy sky. He wears a red coat trimmed in gold, a blue sash draped over his shoulder, and other insignia that signal his high rank.

Subject & Meaning

Bernardin Gigault de Bellefonds (1630‑1694) rose to the rank of Marshal of France, a senior military office in the reign of Louis XIV. The portrait emphasizes his authority and noble status through sumptuous dress and a dignified bearing, reflecting the tradition of official portraiture that sought to convey the virtues of service and loyalty to the crown.

Technique & Style

Albrier, trained under Jean‑Baptiste Regnault, employs a polished, academic approach typical of early‑19th‑century French portraiture. The brushwork is smooth, rendering fabrics and facial features with precise detail. The muted, atmospheric sky background serves to isolate the figure, while the contrast of red, gold, and blue highlights the ceremonial costume.

History & Provenance

Created in 1837, the work entered the collection of the Palace of Versailles, where it remains displayed among other portraits of notable French statesmen. Albrier exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon during the 1820s and 1830s, and this painting exemplifies the type of official commission that secured his reputation.

Context

The portrait belongs to a broader 19th‑century revival of interest in France’s ancien régime figures, aligning with the July Monarchy’s emphasis on national heritage. By depicting a 17th‑century marshal in a contemporary academic style, Albrier bridges historical subject matter with the artistic conventions of his own era.
