Created in 1599, *Februar* is an oil painting on canvas attributed to Leandro Bassano. Executed during the early Baroque period, the work exemplifies the transition from the late Renaissance sensibilities of the Bassano workshop to the more dynamic visual language that would dominate seventeenth‑century Italian art. It now forms part of the permanent holdings of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

Context

Leandro Bassano, also known as Leandro dal Ponte, hailed from the town of Bassano del Grappa and was the third son of the prominent painter Jacopo Bassano. Trained in the Venetian tradition, he worked alongside his brother Francesco Bassano the Younger before establishing his own reputation, which eventually earned him a knighthood conferred by the Doge of Venice.

Technique & Style

The canvas supports a layered application of oil pigments, characteristic of early Baroque practice. Leandro employs a restrained palette and careful modeling of light to give the figures a sense of volume, while retaining the naturalistic detail inherited from his father's workshop. The composition balances a calm interior space with subtle movement, hinting at the emerging Baroque dynamism.

History & Provenance

After its completion, the painting entered private collections before being acquired by the Kunsthistorisches Museum, where it has remained on display. Documentation traces its ownership through several European collectors, reflecting the broader interest in the Bassano family's output among aristocratic patrons of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
