The painting was commissioned by Lorenzo the Magnificent and was initially recorded at the Palazzo Pitti in 1687. It later moved to the Palazzo Corsi near San Gaetano in 1865, and then changed hands within the Waterfield family in the late 19th Century before being acquired by the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum in Berlin.
