About this work

Overview

Created around 1490, Luca Signorelli’s Holy Family for the Parte Guelfa is a circular oil painting measuring 124 cm across. It is presently displayed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and derives its name from the Palazzo di Parte Guelfa, the original commission site.

Subject & Meaning

The composition depicts a domestic scene of the Virgin Mary holding the infant Christ while reading a book, with Saint Joseph leaning forward to point at the text. The child gazes inquisitively, suggesting a moment of instruction and contemplation within the Holy Family.

Technique & Style

Executed in oil on a round panel, the work employs a restrained palette that highlights the red of the Virgin’s dress against muted surroundings. Subtle chiaroscuro models the figures, giving them a three‑dimensional presence against a dark, indistinct background.

History & Provenance

Mentioned by Giorgio Vasari in his *Lives of the Artists*, the painting remained in the Camera della Comunità (also called the Sala delle Udienze) of the Palazzo until it was transferred to the Uffizi on 27 January 1802, after an authorization granted two years earlier.

Context

This piece represents one of Signorelli’s earliest forays into the tondo format for religious subjects, joining a broader Florentine tradition of circular devotional images intended for private or semi‑public spaces.
