About this work
Lucian Freud made this print in 1990. It shows a man lying on a bed with no clothes on. Freud often drew people this way.
This print isn’t the final version. The printer tried different ink colors and layouts before deciding. You can still see where they tweaked the plate.

Overview
Lucian Freud’s 1990 print, titled *Naked Man on a Bed*, depicts an unclothed male figure reclining on a bed. The work is an etching, produced in several trial proofs before the final edition was issued. The image reflects Freud’s recurring interest in intimate, unidealised portraiture of the human body.
Subject & Meaning
The sitter for the composition was Angus Cook, a frequent model for Freud during the 1980s. The straightforward presentation of the nude, without narrative embellishment, continues Freud’s exploration of flesh, vulnerability and the physical presence of his subjects.
Technique & Style
The etching plate was tested in multiple inks: a brown‑black proof, a pure black trial, and a later edition printed in a greyer tone with lighter line work.
The etching plate was tested in multiple inks: a brown‑black proof, a pure black trial, and a later edition printed in a greyer tone with lighter line work. Variations include stopped‑out areas on the legs and toes, and the plate was printed both in portrait and landscape orientations. A cancellation proof shows the plate after it had been scratched out, confirming the print’s developmental stages.
History & Provenance
The printer Marc Balakjian annotated the proofs while experimenting with ink colour and format. The final edition was issued after these trials. A related painted version bearing the same title exists in a private collection, indicating the subject’s recurrence across media.
Context
Freud’s practice in the late 20th century often involved repeated sessions with the same models, producing series of drawings, paintings and prints. This print belongs to that period of intensive study of the male form, aligning with his broader oeuvre of stark, observational portraiture.
