About this work

Overview

Untitled is a 2019 work by British artist Mark Manders, presented as a fabricated newspaper. Produced by offset printing on paper, it forms part of an eleven‑item series that mimics the format of a daily press edition. The piece is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Subject & Meaning

The fabricated newspaper displays a headline rendered in uneven, bold lettering: “SAINTLINESS YAREST: DUCTS STRAMONIES.” The body text consists of densely packed, nonsensical strings of words, while a faint, blurred photograph on the right suggests a shadowy figure against a wall. The absurdity of the language and image invites viewers to question the authority and authenticity of printed media.

Technique & Style

Manders employed conventional offset printing techniques to produce a realistic newspaper aesthetic, yet the content subverts expectations through its fabricated typographic errors and distorted visual elements. The black‑and‑white palette reinforces the illusion of an ordinary press item while the deliberate smudging and uneven lettering signal its constructed nature.

History & Provenance

Created in 2019, Untitled was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art shortly after its completion, joining a broader body of Manders’ work that explores fictional narratives and objecthood. The piece remains on view as part of MoMA’s contemporary print collection.
