The original work was executed in oil paint on oak panels, characteristic of early Netherlandish art. A drawing of the full composition, possibly by the Master of the Drapery Studies, survives in Stockholm's Nationalmuseum.

The altarpiece is lost, with three fragments housed in the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. The drawing of the full work, by a follower of van der Weyden, is in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
