About this work

Overview

Created around 1420, this three‑panel work presents the Virgin Mary holding the infant Christ at its center, flanked by saints. Executed by the anonymous Master of the Holy Kinship the Elder, the piece belongs to the early International Gothic tradition and is part of the collection of the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.

Subject & Meaning

The central scene features Mary in blue, cradling the Christ child whose halo signals divinity. To her left and right stand three female saints—Agnes of Rome, Catherine of Alexandria, and Dorothea of Caesarea—each identified by traditional attributes. Their presence underscores themes of purity, learned wisdom, and martyrdom, reinforcing the devotional function of the altarpiece.

Technique & Style

The panels are painted on a gold ground, a common medieval device that eliminates spatial depth and emphasizes the iconic nature of the figures. Figures are rendered with a flat, almost sculptural quality, their garments outlined in bold reds, yellows and greens. The calm, expressionless faces and simplified forms reflect the International Gothic emphasis on elegance over naturalism.

History & Provenance

Attributed to the Master of the Holy Kinship the Elder, an artist active in the early 15th‑century German lands, the triptych entered the Gemäldegalerie Berlin’s holdings in the 20th century. Its provenance prior to museum acquisition remains sparsely documented, typical for works of this period and anonymity.

Context

Depictions of the Madonna and Child accompanied by saints were a staple of devotional art in medieval Europe, serving both liturgical and private prayer purposes. The inclusion of Agnes, Catherine, and Dorothea aligns the work with popular hagiographic cults of the time, offering patrons a visual intercession of revered female exemplars.
