The chiaroscuro lighting models the figures’ faces and fabrics, while the careful rendering of ruffled collars, hats and swords conveys a sense of material richness without overt dramatization.

The artist, of Flemish descent, was active in Amsterdam and likely trained under Cornelis van der Voort before mentoring Bartholomeus van der Helst. The painting entered the Rijksmuseum’s collection, where it remains part of the museum’s holdings of Dutch Golden Age portraiture.
